Friends + Interlocutors,
With Steve Walt on the Lobby & Iran
The only problem I have with The Israel Lobby and U.S. Foreign Policy is that it has had no salubrious effect on U.S. Foreign Policy. If anything, The Lobby’s stranglehold on Washington is stronger now than it was when the article and book were written 20 years ago.
The craven Tel Aviv-Washington sneak attack on Iran proves that point. It is unprecedented in the history of the United States. Objectively speaking, it is bonkers.
What is the explanation for this? My best guess is, money. Bipartisan bribery. Both parties have, in effect, been bought and paid for. The average Washington politician is not interested in foreign policy issues per se, in particular, on the rightness and wrongness of what America does in the Middle East or elsewhere.
What talks, what is most important, to office holders are campaign contributions and avoiding bad publicity at all costs. Trump, in particular, is a man of money. He’s not a man of ideas. He worships money.
So he’s a perfect target for the Israel Lobby. Netanyahu and the Zionist Jews embedded in the White House did not trick Trump into attacking Iran.
Like members of the Senate and Congress, Trump knows what he is doing and he wants to benefit from it. Money is the key to their world. And evidently no amount of exposing the influence and malevolence of the Israel Lobby is going to change American foreign policy.
